Despite a great start of the first Test match, Indian team may suffer a huge blow as the team's star bowler Zaheer Khan left the day after bowling 13.3 overs due to a leg injury. According to the source, in case the diagnosis reports confirms the leg injury to be a hamstring-related injury, Zaheer will have to remain at least two weeks out of action and might as well miss the whole series.
Sources also says that the schedule for the matches of the series is made such that there is not much time for the bowler to recover soon and make himself available for the next match.
Loss of Zaheer will be a huge bonus for English batsmen, who struggled throughout yesterday to deal with his swing attack. Duncan Fletcher, the Indian coach said "Zaheer showed he's probably the bowler we miss the most. Probably, the others lacked experience. Him going off was a big miss. From our point of view, I think maybe we would have been happy with three wickets. I think if he had stayed there and got three or four, we would have ended up having a very good day."
Early in the match, Zaheer Khan removed the English opening pair of Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss, leaving to host at 62 for 2 in 25 overs. However, the host recovered after the fight back from middle order batsmen Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen. Other Indian bowlers failed to threaten the English batsmen. Though Praveen Kumar and Harbhajan Singh were unlucky to claim wickets. On the other hand, Ishanth Sharma who was the man of the series during the last Test series against West Indies, failed to pressurise the English batsmen and was not consistent.
However, Indian coach Duncan defended his bowlers saying, "Not at all. I thought those players were really up for the game. They wanted to play at Lord's and give it their best shot. Those players have just had three hard Test matches in the West Indies." "It's not just a question of coming over here and getting used to the conditions. We've seen players play a whole Test series and struggle in the field," he added.
Zaheer Khan left the field midway through the 42nd over of the innings with figures of 2-18 in 13.3 overs. England reached a total of 127/2 before the play for the day was called-off due to bad light conditions and rain.
The Second day of this first Test match of the series will start earlier today to compensate for the yesterday's loss.
